Obituary

Albert "Roy" Branson, 78, of Guyton passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 10, 2022 after a long illness.  He was a beloved husband, father and, respected member of the Effingham County community.

Roy was born in McIntosh County, Georgia and spent much of his youth in Pierson, Florida. He and his family moved to Effingham County where he graduated from high school.  After serving his country in the US Army here and overseas, he returned home and married Mary Young to start a family.

Roy started his career working for Union Camp Corporation, first in McIntosh County as a heavy-duty mechanic, then relocating to Ware County as a foreman of the Waycross garage. He returned to Effingham County in 1981 to resettle with Mary and his daughters, Laura, Louise, and Leigh. He was heavily engaged with all three of his daughters' participation in scholastic and recreation department basketball and softball and raised them to be strong, independent-minded adults. In 1999, he finished his tenure as a heavy-duty mechanic and began a second career with Fuller Chevrolet in the parts department.

After his retirement in 2009, Roy continued his very active life in Effingham.  His love of athletics and team sports led him to a lifetime of service to the Effingham County Recreation department. There he spent more than 35 years as a coach, referee, umpire, board member, and concessions attendant until illness prevented his further involvement.

Mr. Branson placed a high value on academic achievement, strong work ethic, and civic duties.  He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Susan Branson. His legacy lives on as he is survived by his wife, Mary, daughters Laura Osborne (Hugh), Leigh Szvetics (Alex) and Louise Lachney (Don), grandchildren: Hayden Osborne, Haley Hall (Clark), Ian Osborne, Lily Pastor, and Ivan Szvetics, sisters Barbara Moore and Shirley Cox (Randy), and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the funeral home followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the chapel.
