Albert O. Gnann, Jr.

Albert O. Gnann, Jr., 77, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2016. He was born in Stillwell, Georgia on February 4, 1939. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Eitel Gnann, his parents, A. Otto and Nellie King Gnann, paternal grandparents Alvin O. and Lena Exley Gnann, maternal grandparents Thomas F. and Dora S. King, and his nephew Craig Cochran, a descendant of the Gnann family of Effingham County. He is survived by his sister, Gloria Gnann Cochran of Danielsville, GA, brother-in-law Charles (Dee) Eitel of Franklin, VA, sister-in-law Anne (Charles) Krecklow of Charleston, SC, dear friend Bonnie Oelschig Todd of Arlington, VA, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a long time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Savannah, GA. He remained in close contact with his many friends and relatives in Effingham County, as well as with his childhood church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield. He was a life member and a past member on the board of the Georgia Salzburger Society. For many years he and his friend and business partner Imogene Oelschig McDougal operated Oelschig Floral Shops in Savannah. In 1982, in recognition of his devoted service, Albert was proclaimed the first man recognized as an honorary member of the Savannah Symphony Women's Guild. He supported the Savannah Symphony in a multitude of ways during its history, gave many hours of his time and talent, and created many beautiful floral arrangements. After his retirement from Oelschig's, his knowledge and love of fine things made him a natural for his position on the sales staff of Levy Jewelers in Savannah. He was a member of the Rotary Club and many local, state, and national florist organizations. His magnificent floral creations brought many accolades and his talent, kindness and generosity left all he touched with an enhanced appreciation of the beautiful things around us. The family would like to express appreciation to Albert's caring and loyal neighbors on Ropemaker Lane, the staff at John Wesley Villas, Compassionate Care Hospice, Brown Health and Rehabilitation, Home Instead Senior Care, and Affinis Hospice.
A memorial service conducted by Pastor Peter Hartman will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 3, at 1:00 pm. There will be a celebration of Albert's life at a reception in the church social hall immediately after the service, followed by interment in Stillwell Cemetery, Stillwell, GA.
Remembrances may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 10 W. 31st St., Savannah, GA 31401, or to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 303 S. Laurel St., Springfield, GA 31329.
