Obituary

Russ Waters passed away peacefully on 5-14-2013 at Spanish Oaks Retreat and Hospice. He was born in Savannah on 8-8-1916, son of Alan Russell and Mary Jane Waters. He graduated from Savannah High, spending summers working on Tybee Island. He then obtained a Chemical Engineering degree from Clemson University in 1938.
He also received from Clemson an Army ROTC commission, and became a Captain in the Army Air Force where he flew a B-17 an amazing 32 missions over Europe during WWII. He was a Wing Leader, responsible on missions for 540 fellow airmen. He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals, and four European Battle Stars.
He married Regina Reddick before leaving for the war, and they had three children, Russell – Alan – and Linda Waters. Harshaw Chemical Company employed him for 35 years, and he retired as a Vice President in 1981.
After retirement, Russ and Regina moved back to Savannah to reside at The Landings on Skidaway Island. Back home at last, he enjoyed his favorite pastime of golf almost daily and volunteered weekly at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum.
He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his daughter Linda Waters of Pooler, GA and son Alan Waters (Diana) of Phoenix, AZ; and grandchildren Alicia Waters of Phoenix, AZ and Alana Waters of Scottsdale, AZ. A service will be held at Bonaventure Cemetery for immediate family.
