Port Wentworth-Mr. Alvin "Gene" Johnson, Sr., 81, passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at his home.
Gene was born in Savannah to the late Emory & Geneva Johnson. He was also preceded in death by a son, Alvin Eugene Johnson, Jr., a grandson, John Cheshier Johnson, and his brother, James Perry Johnson. He was a member of Chapel in the Garden Presbyterian Church, and he enjoyed fishing. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve and retired from Union Camp after 42 years of service. After retirement he was employed with both the Garden City Leisure Service Department, and Savannah Christian School in the maintenance department.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Cooper Johnson; sons, John Christopher Johnson, and his wife, Kelli Cheshier Johnson, and Daniel Joseph Johnson; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Myers Johnson; grandchildren, Jason Johnson, Jesse Johnson (Tabitha), Jordan Johnson (Adele), Courtney Johnson, Taylor Johnson, and Dylan Johnson; great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Isaac, Kiersten, Fischer, Silas, and Miles; sister, Janell Johnson McCarthy (Bill), and several nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be on Saturday from 9-10 a.m. with the memorial service to follow at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow at Lower Black Creek Cemetery.
