Deceased – Friday, June 13th, 2014
Anita was born the youngest of five children, to William LaDessi Hurst and Bertie Lee Hurst, of Newington, GA.
Her Siblings include Evelyn Dehner (deceased); W.L. Hurst, Jr. (deceased); Marjorie Adams; and Reba Brannen.
Anita was educated in the public schools of Chatham County, graduating from Commercial High in 1950.
She married David (Smokey) Stanford in June 25, 1950. The Lord blessed Smokey and Anita with two sons – David (Debbie), of Hendersonville, NC; and Kevin (Carol), of Pooler. They also have six grandchildren – Nathan Stanford (Kate), of Huntersville, NC; Kevin Stanford Jr.(Becky), of McDonough, GA; Natalie Downey (Chad), of Phenix City, AL; Emily Stanford, of Thoiry, France; Kristin Stanford, of Pooler; Kerry Stanford, of Pooler. They also have eight great grandchildren.
Anita retired as a paralegal from the United States Attorney's Office. She enjoyed clogging, traveling, and hosting & cooking for family gatherings, cross-stitching, and was a member of the Senior Classic Club.
In 1996 she won the crown of Miss Senior Savannah; and in 1997 was the 1st runner up in the Miss Senior Georgia pageant.
Anita was a charter member of the Rincon Baptist Temple, and later, the West Chatham Baptist Church. She served the Lord in various capacities, including Sunday School teacher, secretarial duties, choir, visitation, etc. She was a people person, and derived great pleasure from doing things for others.
Anita will be sorely missed by all who knew her, but our loss is Heaven's gain.
Visitation will be held at Strickland's Funeral Home, in Pooler, on Sunday, June 15th, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at West Chatham Baptist Church, 1360 South Rogers Street, in Pooler, on Monday, June 16th, at 10:00. Burial will follow at the North Newington Baptist Church cemetery.
