Arthur Rud, Sr.
Kildare – Arthur Rud, Sr., 84, passed away November 26, 2017 at Westwood Nursing Center in Statesboro, GA.
Rud, as he preferred to be called, was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Fort Hamilton High School and joined the Air Force at age 17. In the Summer of 1955, he caught the eye of Doris Hodges and they were married shortly after. They were blessed with four children. Through the years the family was stationed in various locations including Korea, Thailand, England, Germany, Wyoming, Indiana, and New York. IN 1974 he settled in the Kildare community and he retired after proudly serving 21 years for the U.S. Air Force. After military retirement he operated Rud's Gas & Grocery and was employed by Brooks Instrument Company and Georgia Southern University.
Rud loved to be involved in his community. Even if you did not know him by name you could recognize him by his response to most anything-"Whatever". He was past Georgia Southern Veterans Association Secretary, VFW #7116 (Sylvania) Post Commander and VFW District 1 Quartermaster. He had previously served on Mizpah Church Finance Committee, Effingham County Industrial Development Authority and Effingham County Board of Equalization. Rud like to stay on top of political happenings and would often send letters to the editor to set the record straight.
Rud is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Doris Hodges Rud, parents Signe Rappaport and Halvor Rud, brothers, Robert and Gilbert Rud, and daughter-in-law, Darlene Rud.
Survived by children, Beverly (Foy) Ballance of Brooklet, Arthur (Gail) Rud, Jr. of Guyton, Douglas Rud of Newington, and Dawn (Daniel) Lambert of Springfield. Grandchildren, Amber (Jason) Hall, Jennifer (Will) Smith, Erik (Heather Parker) Youmans, D.J. Rud, and step-grandchildren, Tiffany (Jay) Derriso along with great-grandchildren, Logan and Parker Youmans, Nathaniel and Jase Hall, and step-great-grandchildren, Zachary Smith, Cole, Carmen, and Carla Derriso. He also leaves behind his beloved, dachshund, Pippa.
The family would like to give a special thank you the staff of Westwood Nursing Center. They went above and beyond to make sure he was taken care of during his time there.
Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. in the chapel with burial to follow at North Newington Baptist Church Cemetery.
Remembrances may be given to Corinth Baptist Church, 296 Corinth Church Road, Springfield, GA 31329 or Westwood Nursing Center Activities Department, 101 Stockyard Road, Statesboro, GA 30458.
