Bernard C. Pierce, Jr. (Bernie)

Guyton – Bernard C. Pierce, Jr. (Bernie), 88, passed away February 28, 2018 at Hospice Savannah.

He was the son of the late Bernard C. Pierce, Sr. and Marie Pierce Dabney; also preceded in death by a brother, Robert F. (Bob) Pierce.

Born in Sylvania, GA but moved to Savannah at a early age before moving to Effingham County. He retired from Union Camp Corporation (now International Paper) after 32 years of service and served 9 years in the GA National Guard.  He was a member of Bethesda UMC where he served on various committees in the earlier years and was also a Sunday School Teacher.  He graduated from Savannah High School and Armstrong Jr. College.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and Nascar.  He especially enjoyed the Braves games and UGA games as well as all football games.  He enjoyed raising pigeons and was a former member of a racing club.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Edra Zipperer Pierce; 3 sons and 1 daughter-in-law, Duane Pierce, Gary (Teresa) Pierce, and Kevin Pierce; 2 granddaughters, Kristen and Sarah Pierce; 1 sister-in-law, Eleanor Pierce; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a longtime friend, Harold O'Neal.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethesda United Methodist Church. Mr. Pierce will lie in state from 10 a.m.
