POOLER: Rev. Bert James Wheeles, Sr. , 84, died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at his residence.
Rev. Wheeles was born in Ben Hill County to the late, John Phillip Wheeles and Ruby M. Gibson. He was a Baptist minister for over 25 years, serving at Midway First Baptist Church and Tabernacle Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a POW in WWII. He was preceded in death by two grandsons.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Carolyn P. Wheeles; sons, Bert (Sue) Wheeles, Jr., Phillip (Penny) Wheeles, David (Marilyn) Wheeles, and Timothy (Brenda) Wheeles; eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 15, 2009 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Rothwell Baptist Church in Pooler with burial to follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Rothwell Baptist Church, 216 E. Rothwell St. Pooler, GA 31322 or to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
