Port Wentworth – Betty Buckner Elkins, 84, passed from this life on August 8, 2016. She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Irene Buckner; her son, Sidney Franklin Strickland, Jr.; grandson, Jason Allen Collins; and her sister, Judy Grayson. Betty was born on February 28, 1932, in Reka, Georgia, and lived most of her life in Savannah, after graduating from Savannah High School in 1949. She worked as Business Manager at WTOC from 1978 until her retirement in 1995. She was also an Emeritus member of the Martha Washington Chapter #300 of the Eastern Star.
Betty loved flowers and worked tirelessly in her flower beds as long as she was able. She had many plants and enjoyed grafting and repotting plants her parents grew. She also enjoyed genealogy and published a book, with Bill's help, about the Buckner family dating back to the 1700's. There was always a love of animals which Betty passes on to her family members at all levels.
She is survived by her devoted husband, William D. Elkins of Port Wentworth; her three daughters, Sandra Strickland Marshall of Shellman Bluff; Joy Strickland Collins (Steve) of Claxton; Carol Strickland O'Connor (Joe) of Atlanta; her grandchildren, Carter Collins (Becca) of Statesboro, Sidney Strickland, III of Shellman Bluff, and Hannah Strickland of Claxton, her mother-in-law, Betty Elkins and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Elkins Rash and Diane Elkins, all of Pooler. She also will be missed by a niece, Lori Aleff and a nephew, Mike Detrino (Julie), all of Richmond Hill. She has four great-grandchildren, a great-niece, and several cousins. She is also survived by her little Yorkie, Maddie Elkins.
The funeral will be on Friday at 1:30 in the chapel of the funeral home with visitation one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at Westside Memorial Gardens.
