Obituary

Betty Brannen Johnson, affectionately known as Mom, Grandmother, or GG, of Pooler, Georgia, passed away on March 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and friends at Hospice House in Savannah, Georgia.  She was 86 years old.

Born in Statesboro, Betty was the daughter of Jesse and Ida Ellis Brannen.   In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings Wallace, Clyde, Callie, Mamie, Billy, and Jessie. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Vancine Jones of Vidalia, and a brother, Eugene Brannen of Guyton, with whom she shared a special bond.

Betty spent her formative years in Bulloch County before moving to Savannah, where she graduated from Commercial High School.  Shortly after graduating, she married the love of her life, Edwin Wayne Johnson, a marriage that would last 68 years. Together, they welcomed two daughters: Robin Johnson Bryant and Kimberly Johnson Melvin (James). Betty and Wayne remained faithfully by each other's side until his passing in November 2024.

Family was always at the heart of Betty's life. She was a devoted wife, full-time mother and homemaker for many years before going to work outside the home at the Chatham County Board of Education.  She was known as an exceptional cook and a meticulous homemaker.

Of all her roles, the one she enjoyed most was that of grandmother.  The time spent with her two grandchildren, Adam Bryant (Amanda) and Kevin Bryant (Rebekah), brought her immense happiness. Later in life, Betty was blessed with two great-granddaughters, Meadow and Molly Bryant, who were a constant source of joy and pride.

Betty's love for her family was her guiding light, and her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She was a woman of unwavering loyalty and devotion, and her legacy will continue through the generations she touched.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.   In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that anyone considering donating in her memory do so to Hospice Savannah.  A heartfelt and special thank you to Integrity Healthcare and especially Adrienne, Savannah, Tanya, and Melody who cared for Betty with kindness, love, and compassion during her final days and weeks.

Betty will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit, love, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
