Obituary

Mrs. Betty Lou Rogers Rowan, of Pooler, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Hospice Savannah.  She was surrounded by family and friends.

She was the daughter of the late Lloyd Cullen Rogers & Hallie Shuman Rogers Hinely, and also was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Robert E. ("Bob") Rowan, and step-son, James Rowan.

She graduated in 1957 from the original Savannah High School.  After graduation she worked for the Board of Education at the office of Savannah High School.  She then worked at National Gypsum in Garden City before going to work for IBM Corporation for 17 years, starting as order entry clerk and advancing to administrative operations manager.  As Bob's career progressed, he moved his family to Napa, CA and then New Orleans, LA, where Betty worked for Our Lady of Holy Cross College in the student services department.  After moving back to Savannah in 1987, she worked for Caribbean Lumber Import/Export, then finally for Hunter Maclean as a legal assistant.

Betty was an active member of Bull Street Baptist Church for many years.  She was a dedicated Sunday School teacher and member of the Pilot Sunday School Class.  She also led Bible studies and served as treasurer for the Hispanic Mission that Bull Street started and for Christ Community Church.  She lovingly volunteered with AARP for twenty years to do income tax preparation for those who hate taxes.  Despite her limited mobility and chronic health problems in her later years, she was always serving others and volunteering her time.

Betty was an avid reader who always finished what she started.  She also a talent for sewing and embroidery and such activities brought her many years of happiness.  Betty has enjoyed her years of retirement and was never happier than when surrounded by her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Beth Koobs of Woodland, CA and Becca (Brandon) Galloway of Pooler, GA; five grandchildren, Alex Koobs of Sacramento, CA, Jackson Koobs of Woodland, CA, Nathan Koobs of Longview, WA, Brayden and Brielle Galloway of Pooler, GA; step-son, Robert E. Rowan, Jr. of Florida; sisters, Jan Thackston of Clermont, FL and Jackie Rogers of Taylors, SC, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be on Monday, December 17, 2018 at the Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home located at 901 W. Hwy. 80 in Pooler from 12 until 12:50 p.m. followed by the funeral in the chapel at 1 p.m.  Burial will follow at Bonaventure Cemetery.
