Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Jones Steigerwalt
Springfield- Betty Steigerwalt, 85, peacefully passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at her residence after a brave hard-fought battle of cancer.
Mrs. Steigerwalt was a native of Palmerton, PA but lived in Springfield for over the past 50 years. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Jones. She was a retired school teacher from Effingham County school system spending most of her years at Springfield Elementary. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield serving as a Sunday School teacher and a dedicated choir member. She taught swimming lessons for many years teaching hundreds of children how to swim. She was an avid sports enthusiast. Her favorite team was the Georgia Bulldogs and any team her grandchildren played for. She enjoyed cooking, listening to Frank Sinatra, playing games, crossword puzzles and travelling. She was a devoted "Grammie" to her grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Steigerwalt and her brother, Johnny Jones.
Survivors include her son, David Steigerwalt; daughters, Karen Gifford and Beth Steigerwalt, all of Springfield, and Jean Hunt (Steven) of Guyton; 3 very loving grandchildren, Kasey Jones (Zachary), Cheyenne and Carson Hunt; a brother, David Jones of Allentown, PA; and several nieces and nephews in PA.
The family would like to thank the staff from Hospice of Savannah for their special care and personalized service.
Interment will be held at the Beaufort National Cemetery at 10 am Friday, February 10, 2017.
Memorial Service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield at 3 pm Sunday, February 12, 2017 in the sanctuary.
