Brian Fitzgerald passed away on Monday, October 1, 2018, at the age of 53. He died peacefully, surrounded by family, at his home in Ellabell, GA. Brian was loved by many and he will be sorely missed. He is survived by wife, Carolyn Fitzgerald, of Ellabell, GA, son Brian Fitzgerald (Heather), daughter Jessica Anthony (Tim), son Matthew Fitzgerald (Meredith), son Brandon Fitzgerald (Ashley), daughter Faith Fitzgerald, and daughter Heather Fitzgerald. He is also survived by mother Alicia Fitzgerald and brother Patrick Fitzgerald, of Augusta, GA, brother Mark Irwin, of Statesboro, GA, grandchildren Judah and Anden Anthony, of Warner Robins, GA, the grandchild expected February 2019, and his mother and father-in-law, Sue & Bert Wheeles. He was preceded in death by his father, Phillip Fitzgerald, and a brother-in-law, Mark Ashley Wheeles. He graduated from Harlem High School in 1983, soon thereafter he married Carloyn Fitzgerald and moved to Savannah, GA and then to Brooklet where they built a home together for 33 happy years.
Although you wouldn't have known it by looking at him and witnessing his hard work eithic, Brian faced a number of health battles throughout his life with courage and by always leaning on the Lord. His last victorious battle began September 2016 after being diagnosed with lung cancer, Brian and his family used every high and low to witness of the Lords goodness. The family would like to take a moment to thank every nurse, doctor and caretaker that became like family to them in this journey, without there love and devotion a difficult circumstance would have been much harder.
His greatest joy was his family, he loved his family and he poured into them, unselfishly. His absence will leave a great void in the hearts and lives of those he leaves behind. Yet, those who knew him are better for it. He ran the good race, and he did so with dedication, dignity and love. And so, it is with much sadness and with great respect that we note his passing and we honor his life.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Thomas C Strickland and Sons Funeral Home in Pooler, GA. A reception will follow the funeral at South Newington Baptist Church located at 453 John Carter Road in Bloomingdale. In lieu of flowers the family is asking for financial contributions to help cover the cost of medical and end-of-life expenses, checks may be made payable to Carolyn Fitzgerald, 7321 Hwy. 119 S., Ellabell, GA 31308.
