Calvin Usher

Savannah – Calvin Usher, 85, died Sunday, November 21, 2010 at his residence.

Calvin was born September 20, 1925 in Guyton Georgia the eleventh of thirteen children born to Solicitor Jesse and Ada Usher. He graduated from the Guyton High School in 1944 and was drafted immediately in the army. He served with distinction for twenty seven years in various branches of the army. In World War II he was awarded the Bronze Star while serving as an infantryman with the 2nd infantry (Indianhead) division. He was also in the battles of the Ardennes, Rhineland, and central Europe. He was awarded three bronze service stars, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal. He served in the National Guard with the 117th ACWS. In the Army Reserves he served with the 401st Ordnance Battalion and was Company Commander of the Headquarters Company. The Headquarters Company was awarded the battalion streamer as the best-drilled company. Calvin took advanced ROTC at the University of Georgia and was elected to the Scabbord and Blade honor society and also received a University letter as a member of the rifle team. After graduating from the University as a 2nd lieutenant he graduated from the Armored (tank) school at Ft. Know, Kentucky. He was recalled to active army duty for the Korean War. During the Korean War he served as the Ass't G-4 in the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was the youngest officer on the general's staff. He later served with the 310th Logistical Command in the Washington, DC area. He retired as a major with 27 years of military service.

Calvin graduated from the University of Georgia with an AB degree in history and a masters degree in school administration. He did advanced graduate studies at Florida State University and the University of Virginia. In Effingham County, Georgia he coached, taught high school courses at the Effingham Academy and was principal at Rincon Elementary School. He served as a teacher and principal for 20 years in Fairfax County, Virginia. He retired after serving 27 years in public school education.

Calvin was a longtime member and deacon at First Christian Church in Savannah. After retiring, he travelled and danced with the Savannah Shag Club.

Left to cherish his memory are his two sisters, Sadie Shearouse of Springfield and Freida U. Morgan of Savannah; a number of nieces and nephews; and a devoted family friend, Sam Tach.

Visitation: 5-7 pm Monday, November 22, 2010 in the funeral home.

Funeral: 11 am Tuesday, November 23, 2010 in the funeral home chapel.

Interment: Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery.
