Pooler-Police Chief Clarence Edgar "Butch" Chan, 65, passed away on Monday, August
30, 2010 on the final day of a Mediterranean cruise. Although born in Pittsburgh, PA he
had resided in Savannah since the age of three being reared by his mother Emma Huger
Chan and step-father Sandor Chung Chan. He graduated from Savannah High School in
1963 and had his name changed to Chan in honor of his step-father. After a short stint in
the Navy he worked at Fries Egg Company, Coastal News, and Field's Ambulance
Service before joining the Chatham County Police Department rising to the rank of
Lieutenant. From 1980 to 1986 he was employed as a Special Agent for CSX Railroad.
In 1986 he became Police Chief in Pooler and remained as such until his death. He
received degrees from Armstrong College, John Marshall Law School, FBI National
Academy, Police Command College, Columbus University, and recently received his
PhD from Capella University. He was a Criminal Justice Instructor at St. Leo University.
Chan was much involved in police organizations and his community. He loved his
church and church family and he served as Senior and Junior Wardens. He enjoyed
"hitting the round ball" (golf). His goal in life was to protect and to serve his community.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Clark Chan; son, Peter (Jennifer), son Steven (Karla);
grandchildren, Dayton, Austin, Clark, Larson Ameila and Colson; sisters, Evelyn Ballard
and Sandra Chan; his mother-in-law, Martha Clark; sisters- and brothers-in-law, and
several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Thomas C.
Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel in Pooler.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at the Cathedral of St. John
the Baptist located at 222 East Harris Street in Savannah.

In lieu of flowers remembrances may be given to St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, P.O.
Box 576, Pooler, GA 31322 or to St. Leo's University, The Clarence Edgar Chan
Criminal Justice Scholarship Fund or the charity of your choice.
