Obituary

Charles Steven Fountain

January 28, 1951 – August 14, 2023

Savannah - Charles Steven Fountain, 72, of Savannah, GA, passed away Monday, August 14, 2023, after a long illness.

Steve was born January 28, 1951, to Loren Bruce and Edith Boykin Preveaux Fountain.  He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers James Nelson Preveaux, Ronald David Preveaux, and Kenneth Loren Fountain.  He is survived by his sister Karen Fountain Stanhope (Frank) of Pooler, GA, several nieces, nephews, and his beloved cat of 12 years, Katie.

Steve was kind-hearted, caring, generous and one of those special people that had a way of making everyone feel comfortable.  In his retirement, he enjoyed entertaining, farming, canning, and spending time in his big red barn raising chickens and ducks on his "Peanut Park Farm".  He was community-minded, and being an excellent cook, over the years held community events serving his delicious home-cooked meals. He hosted family events at his barn and once, he even turned his barn into a beautiful wedding venue.  Steve, along with several of his classmates, also organized a 50-year high school class reunion, that was simply awesome. He loved music and was an accomplished pianist with deep knowledge of how to play different styles of music.  Steve also loved to write and was a member of his school newspaper which later prepared him for a specific employment opportunity.

Steve was a 1969 graduate of Robert W. Groves High School, Garden City, GA, and attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton, GA, and the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. Being a dedicated fan, he loved watching the Braves and the Dawgs, and rarely missed a game.

For 37 years, Steve worked for CSX Railroad and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.  In early 1987, he moved to Detroit, MI, at the invitation of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way International President to become the Brotherhood's Director of Communications and Editor of the international publication. Because of Steve's love of writing and his railway knowledge, he was able to expertly and thoroughly document safety issues that netted corrective actions providing the rail workers with a safer working environment.  After completion of this role in Detroit, Steve returned to Savannah in 1994 where he continued to work for CSX Railroad until he retired.

The family would like to thank Steve's long-time friend and caregiver, Ronnie Evans, for his friendship, support, and endless care during Steve's illnesses over the years.
