Virginia Cleriece Woodard York, age 83, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024 in her
home. She was born on September 1, 1941 in Santa Anna, Texas to Louie Morris Woodard and
Virginia Pauline Sherman Woodard. She spent her childhood years in Texas and graduated
from Amarillo High School in 1959. Throughout her lifetime, the Panhandle always held a
special place in her heart.
She married Homer Daniel York on April 10, 1959. They made their home in Tifton, Georgia.
They were both active in New River Baptist Church for many decades.
Known to her Texas family as "Sis", she is the beloved mother of Dan York, Wendy Cowart
(Richard), and Jo Crosby (John).
She retired from the Georgia Department of Labor where she worked for three decades in
Veterans Affairs. Even after retirement, she was a devoted advocate for veteran's services.
She enjoyed history, all types of art, and was always up for an outdoor festival. She loved dogs
particularly her dachshund, Spanky. She enjoyed flowers, garage sales, and a great game of
Bingo. While she had many interests, her family was her focus and devotion. She was always
happiest when she was with them.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother (John), and her husband. She is survived
by her sister, Jean Owen of Texas; her three children; and six grandchildren: Tyler Cowart
(Carmel), Madison West (Brian) and Sydney Jones (Ryley), Erin Gillis (Spencer), Wesley Crosby,
Jeff Crosby (Tayler). She leaves four great grandchildren: Daniel Cowart, Lily Grace Cowart,
Walker West, and Macie West.
The family will host a Memorial Service at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 23, 2024 in the
chapel at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home in Springfield, GA. The family will
receive visitors from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Friends and family are invited. In lieu of flowers
the family requests that donations be made to the ministry of The Samaritan's Purse.
