Obituary

Retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major Stanley "Sonny" Lee Fox, 83, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, at his home in Rincon, Ga., surrounded by his family.

Born on July 18, 1942, in Mountain Cove, W. Va., Stanley was the son of the late Stanley O. Fox and Mable Pridemore Fox. He enlisted in the Army following high school, beginning a 27-year career that would see him rise through the ranks to the highest enlisted position.

Stanley was a loving husband and father, and a proud grandfather who will be dearly missed. In addition to his parents, Stanley was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Michael Fox, brother Larry Pridemore, and sisters Jean Fox McClung and Becky Fox Shuff. He is survived by his loving wife, Loretta; daughter, Sonia Fuller (Fred) of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Jerry (Jana) of Rincon, Ga; stepdaughter, Cristy (Ed) Maynor of Hico, W. Va.; stepson, Davy Fox of Hico, W. Va.; brother, Robert (Peggy) of Rosedale, Va.; sister Betty LeMasters of Manassas, Va., and grandchildren, Jessica, Katie, Jake, Amelia, Luke, Micheal, Riles, Kimball, Anslee and Lincoln.

Stanley treasured spending time with Loretta exploring the woods and roads in his beloved Georgia and West Viriginia, at their cabin on the New River, foraging for mushrooms, cheering on the WV Mountaineers and any sport or activity his grandchildren were involved in, and loving on his faithful dog, Muffin. He could spin a tall tale that had everyone laughing, always had a twinkle in his eye, and loved telling stories of his adventures growing up in West Virginia and in the Army.

Stanley retired as Command Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army where he served with distinction. He was a U.S. Army Ranger (Airborne) and Vietnam Veteran who had many assignments across the world, mostly with the Army's elite 75th Ranger Regiment. Stanley had many commendations and awards including a Bronze Star Medal, a Purple Heart Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, and many more. He was widely known for his patriotism and dedication to serving his country.

In keeping with his wishes, Stanley will be cremated and his ashes buried beside his son Jeffrey at Fox Farm, Mountain Cove, W. Va.
