Cynthia Coffey Smith

BLOOMINGDALE -- Mrs. Cynthia Coffey Smith, 59, died Friday, July 27, 2007, at home while under the care of VistaCare Hospice after a four-year battle with cancer.

A Savannah native, Cindy was a 1965 graduate of Savannah High School, earned her Bachelors degree from Armstrong State College and her Masters in Elementary Education from Savannah State College. She taught fifth and sixth grades for 21 years at Calvary Day School, and later served as a pre-kindergarten teacher for Taylor County Schools and taught sixth grade for a brief time in Columbus.

She was a 20-year resident of Pooler, where she served as pianist for Trinity United Methodist Church. Married to the Rev. Loran D. Smith, Jr., pastor of Alpha United Methodist Church in Bloomingdale, Cindy lived in Atlanta in 1994, and later in Howard, Ga., and Columbus where the Rev. Smith served various churches in the South Georgia United Methodist Conference. Cindy was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi, and has been a member of Alpha United Methodist Church since 2002. She was active in various Methodist organizations.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Loran D. Smith, Jr.; two sons, Loran Dennis Smith, III, and Thomas Corley Smith; a daughter, Julia Elizabeth Smith; two daughters-in-law, Tara L. Smith and Ashleigh J. Smith; her father, Thomas F. Coffey, Jr. and stepmother, Marjorie K. Coffey; and two grandsons, Liam and Aaron. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary C. Coffey.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral Home.

Funeral: 11 a.m. on Monday at Alpha United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. at the Church. Burial will follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
