Pooler - Mr. David (Buddy) Myers Gross was born in Savannah, GA on February 5, 1936 and went home to the Lord on Saturday, September 12, 2015 after a long and very courageous battle with cancer. His will to live and determined nature allowed him to live beyond all expectations. Buddy retired from Union Camp after 40 years of service and was a lifelong resident of Pooler, GA. He attended the Bloomingdale Alliance Church and was always blessed by the lessons and friendship in the senior Sunday School Class. In earlier years, Buddy enjoyed hunting with his various dogs but his greatest enjoyment was racing pigeons. He had raced pigeons on and off since he was 12 years old. Throughout the years, he flew with several Racing Pigeon Clubs and was instrumental in getting the Coastal Empire Combine organized in 1984. His great excitement was winning the Southeastern Open in 2007 with one of his birds flying 567 miles on the day to beat out almost 1000 birds. He named his racing loft "Journey's End" and he always said "what a thrill to see them come and fold those wings to the landing board". Mr. Gross was preceded in death by his parents, David Sylvester and Sallie Sherrod Gross, and his brother, Jack Curtis Gross, and sister, Barbara Bowen.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Gross; sons, Doug Gross (Carolina), and David Gross (Anna); his step-daughter, Tricia Quarterman (Mark), step-son, Rick Clark (Shannon); grandchildren, Tyson, John, and Mills Gross, Soloman and Simon Gross, Laura, Christina and Mark Quarterman, Jr., Amber and Alison Clark; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2015 at the Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home in Pooler.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2015 in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Newton Cemetery in Pooler.
Remembrances may be given to Bloomingdale Alliance Church, 501 West Highway 80, Bloomingdale, GA 31302.
