Garden City-Mr. Donald F. Long, 80, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014.
Mr. Donald was born in Egypt, GA to the late Marvin & Mary Long. He was also preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he served on the church council for many years and was the financial secretary for 40 years and had just resigned due to his ill health. He retired from Hunt Wesson after 39 years of service as a supervisor, and after his retirement he drove cars for Avis-Budget Rent-A-Car for 20 years. He served in the Air National Guard 165th for 11 years, was a NASCAR fan, and enjoyed taking his RV to Statesboro to visit his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara N. Long. Although Mr. Long had no children or grandchildren of his own, he became the "adopted" father of Kitty (Mitchell) Cason, and Travis Roberts, and "Pappy" to Grace Hannah, Malone, and Hudson Cason; brother and sister-in-law, Lynwood (Betty Jean) Long; sisters, Quida Hammock, Rebena Brower, Mildred (George) Edwards, and Evelyn (deCaradeauc) Jaudon; a number of nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Denise (Doug) Edwards and Kimberly (John) Fisher.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Funeral: 11 a.m. on Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with burial to follow at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Effingham County.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be given to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 41 Main Street, Garden City, GA 31408.
