Port Wentworth-Mr. Donald Smith, 68, passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at Hospice of Savannah.
He was born to Gladys and Hoyt Smith, Sr. on August 14, 1944 in Bulloch County, GA. He spent most of his younger years in Savannah but moved from Savannah High School to Effingham County High School during his senior year of 1962.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joyce Smith of Port Wentworth; two sons, Keith Smith (Tanya) of Richmond Hill and Michael Smith of Port Wentworth; two granddaughters, Lauren and Madison Smith; sister, Hazel Kirby of Swainsboro, GA; two brothers, Jerry Smith (Carolyn) of Cave Springs, GA and Carlton Smith of Rincon, GA; sister-in-law, Shirley Smith of Savannah, GA and many nieces and nephews.
He was a loyal member of the Carpenters Local #256 for 45 years. He loved his craft and did all he could to pass his knowledge on to younger members. I am sure that at times he was considered a "tough teacher". There was a special bond with his union brothers and they enjoyed many stories. He took a lot of pride in his garden and enjoyed fishing with his buddies. He also served in the Army National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Hoyt Smith, Jr. and a sister, Betty Jean Hook.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Funeral: 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
