Rincon, Georgia – Elaine M. Batty, 72, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Hospice Savannah. She fought a courageous battle with Ovarian Cancer for over two years.
Born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Manual and Emily Mello, Jr. Elaine graduated from Fairhaven High School in 1961. She was married June 6, 1964 and moved South.
Elaine worked in several positions in her career, including executive secretary, secretary to the principal of a Catholic elementary school, and auto dealership bookkeeper. She was a secretary in the Athletic Department of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia for several years. She was owner of Village Bath Shoppe in Punta Gorda, Florida. She was faithful supporter of her husband when he was C.E.O of two carpet yarn companies over a twenty year period. Elaine was a Catholic, and a member of The Cathedral of St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Savannah, Georgia. She was a volunteer in the rectory office of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Macon, Georgia when the Batty's resided in Macon. Along with her husband, she was a member of Idle Hour Country Club in Macon. She was a hospital volunteer when the Batty's resided in Forsyth, Georgia. Elaine was a faithful Atlanta Braves baseball fan, Georgia Tech football fan, and a golf fan who for many years attended the Masters Golf Tournament with her husband and friends. Elaine was an avid dog lover, especially Yorkshire Terriers, including her precious Abby who died in 2013 at the age of 12, and currently the faithful Amy.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Harry J. Batty, Jr. of Rincon; her son, John Batty of Nashville, Tennessee and his children, Erica, Michael, William, and Emily. Son, Christopher Batty and his wife, Peggy Tachdjian of Los Angeles, California and their children, Owen and Lucas. A sister, Ida and her husband, Armand Boucher of South Dennis, Massachusetts. A sister, Dorothy and her husband, John Wordell of Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Mother-in-law, Beatrice Batty of North Port, Florida. Many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the Summit Cancer Center, Memorial Hospital, and the Hospice Savannah facility on Eisenhower Drive for their loving care of their wife and mother.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Strickland Funeral Home, 2460 Hwy. 21 S., Rincon, Georgia 31326.
Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at The Cathedral of St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Savannah, Georgia.
Burial will follow in the Catholic Cemetery.
