Obituary

Guyton - Emory Edsel "Ed" Cox 80, of Guyton died Monday, January 8, 2018 at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Alfred and Jerelene (Couey) Cox. He grew up in Savannah, GA. He was a graduate of Commercial High School in 1956 where he met his high school sweetheart, Gwen Martin Cox and they were married after graduation. He was employed at Savannah Sugar Refinery where he picked up his nick name "Ed". He enjoyed working at the refinery until retirement after 43 years. Never wanting to be retired, he went on to working at Peterbilt delivering trucks all over the country. After that, he went to work at St. Joseph Candler Hospital driving doctors and staff to their satellite offices. Ed enjoyed working with people and never met a stranger.
Ed was a member of Guyton United Methodist Church where he attended faithfully until his illness. He was also a member of the Port Wentworth Jaycees for many years and received the man of the year award. He was currently a member of the "Over the Sugar Hill" retirement club of Savannah Foods and the Cobra Club. Ed enjoyed Nascar racing and going to Daytona every year to watch them for many years. He spent many years as an avid supporter of Cox's Racin, and the biggest fan of his grandson and great grandson.
Ed loved his family and enjoyed the many vacations together.
In addition to his parents, Ed is preceded in death by his brother, Louie Cox and a great grandson, Jackson Lawton Mikell. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Gwen Martin Cox, children, Terry Woods (Mike), Emory Cox, Jr. (Debbie), and Karen Chumley (Tim); a sister, Lawanna McGrew of Melbourne, Florida; five grandchildren; 9 great- grandchildren and one great great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5pm until 8 o'clock Wednesday evening at Strickland & Son Funeral Home on Highway 80 in Pooler.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Effingham Memorial Gardens.
