Pooler-Mrs. Evelyn D. Wilkes, 98, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Azalea Health Care in Metter, GA.
She was born in Emanuel County to the late Willie and Mamie Durden. She attended Oak Park High School where she met and married Curtis Wilkes in 1935. They lived in Metter through World War II. They moved to Savannah in 1947 where she was employed as a Department Manager for S.H. Kress Company. They moved to Pooler in 1962 where Curtis started a business and he later served as Mayor of Pooler for several years. Evelyn was a loyal and dedicated member of Pooler First Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was a people person who especially enjoyed her friends in the Win One Sunday School Class, and she was a greeter at the church and spent much time on the Visiting Committee.
She was preceded in death by Curtis. Survivors include a son, Davy (Jeannette) of Lakewood Ranch, FL; grandson, Dean, of Tampa, FL; granddaughter, Laura Sandifer (Courtney); great-grandson, Will, of Fairfax, VA; sisters, Sarah Arnold, and Carolyn Wright Brown of Metter; brother, Billy Durden of Shellman's Bluff; brother-in-law, Jerry Wilkes (Christine) of Vidalia.
The Wilkes family would like to thank Pruitt Health Hospice in Swainsboro for the care given to Mrs. Wilkes.
The funeral service will be at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, 901 W. Hwy. 80 in Pooler on Friday, April 1, 2016 at 2 p.m. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be given to Pooler First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 506, Pooler, GA 31322.
