Clyo – Mr. George G. Allen, age 90, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2012 at his residence.
Mr. Allen was born November 19, 1922, and was a life-long resident of Effingham County. Mr. Allen was a vital and active member of his community who devoted his life to public service. He began his public service at the young age of 22 when he was first appointed to the Effingham County Board of Education. He served on the board of education for 28 years with eight of those being chairman. Additionally, he contributed 16 years as an Effingham County Commissioner, ten of which he performed as chairman. He received numerous awards for his service including, in 1997, the prestigious John Adam Treutlen Award for service rendered to Effingham County. Mr. Allen was a successful businessman. He was self-employed as a timber dealer and a farmer from 1942 until his retirement in 1993. He was appointed to the Citizens and Southern Bank Board in 1973 and served 21 years before retiring in 1994 from the Nations Bank Board of Directors. He also served as a supervisor on the Board of the Ogeechee River Soil and Water Conservation District for twenty plus years. Mr. Allen was a life-long member of Laurel Hill Lutheran Church in Clyo serving numerous years on the church council and other committees. Mr. Allen was an honest, hard-working man of integrity; a man of his word.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Chriss Allen, Sr., and his brothers, Fred Chriss Allen, Jr., and Albert Henry Allen, Sr.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Jaunita (Rahn) Allen; sons, Lamar (Bobbie) Allen and Tommy (Kathy) Allen; a daughter, Betty (Don) Sikes; five grandchildren, Holly (Tim) Usher, Donna (Buddy) Holder, Chriss (Rachel) Allen, Kacy (Josh) Tedder, Troy (Jinci) Allen; 13 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Edna N. Allen and Juanita W. Rahn.
Visitation will be Monday, December 17, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 18, at 11:00 a.m. at Laurel Hill Lutheran Church.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
