Bloomingdale-Mr. George R. "Rock" Wingate, Sr., 85, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2012.
Mr. Wingate was born in Savannah to the late Surrey & Bertie Wingate. He served his country in the Merchant Marines and retired from Union Camp after 43 years of service. He was a master craftsman who could build anything, self-taught himself to play the harmonica and was a Mason with Solomon's Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Wingate and a daughter, Vicki Diane Wingate.
Survivors include his children, George R. & Nonie Wingate, Jr., Deborah & Richard Willoughby, David & Diane Wingate and Rhonda & Keith Messex; special daughter-in-law, Glenda Wingate Harper and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
The funeral to honor Mr. Wingate's life was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Kenny Harrelson officiating. Pallbearers were Scott Lewis, Patrick Hauger, David Ray, Kenny Bibb, Richard Souls and Kenny Souls. Burial followed at Gravel Hill Cemetery with military honors.
