Gladys Dixon Kessler
Rincon- Gladys Dixon Kessler, 95, passed away peacefully December 18, 2014 at Effingham Care Center.
Gladys was born in Colbert, Georgia October 3, 1919. She was the daughter of Eva Picola and Lemon Guy Dixon. She lived in Florida and South Carolina prior to coming to Rincon in 1941 to teach school after having graduated with a BS degree in Education from Columbia College, Columbia, SC. She also attended Armstrong Atlantic University and became certified in the field of Library Science.
She was employed by the Effingham County Board of Education for thirty-six years. After retiring from the public school system in 1981, she worked at the Effingham Academy private school in Springfield for two years as the librarian. She was a member of the Effingham County Chapter of Retired Educators and the State of Georgia Retired Educators.
Gladys loved music and for ten years she was the organist at St. John's Lutheran Church. She also taught an intermediate Sunday School class. For a number of years, she attended Jerusalem Lutheran Church and was a member of the Joy Club and the Pairs and Spares Group. She was a founding member of Bible Lutheran Church.
After her husband's death in 1984, she joined the Excursions Unlimited Travel Club in Savannah and for many years travelled with interesting groups of people throughout the United States and abroad. She enjoyed seeing all the places she had read about.
Gladys loved flowers and spent many hours working in her yard, wearing her wide brimmed straw hat. For many years she was a member of the Rincon Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H.W. (Dick) Kessler; brother, Hansell H. Dixon of Gaston, SC; sisters, Emarie Gransee of Boone, NC, Ione Croad of Cayce, SC and Opal Broughman of West Columbia, SC.
Survivors include one daughter, Charlene Kessler Morgan (Ronnie) of Rincon; two grandsons, Ronald Exley Morgan, Jr. of Rincon and Mac Kessler Morgan (Brandi) of Statham, GA; two great-grandchildren, Kate Morgan and Kessler Morgan of Statham; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Effingham Care Center.
Visitation: 1-2:30 pm Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Bible Lutheran Church.
Funeral: 2:30 pm Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Bible Lutheran Church.
Interment: Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery
Remembrances: Bible Lutheran Church Building Fund, 812 Blue Jay Rd., Rincon, GA 31326.
