Obituary

Henry O Phillips Jr. (Little Bit) died at 6:00pm on Tuesday August 15th 2017 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Home, Wilmington, NC. Born in Savannah, Georgia 3/31/1921 to the late Henry O. Phillips Sr. and Maude Denmark Phillips. Proceeded in death- Lillie (Lil) Stanford Phillips (9/24/2000) wife of over 48 years, also brothers, John and Francis Phillips and daughter Gloria M Crowell.

Mr. Phillips is survived by one daughter- Sandra K Bowers, one granddaughter Kaye Ellington, husband Brett. Three grandsons- James K Crowell, wife Kim, Mike K Crowell, wife Sarah, and Mike Simms, wife Chelle. Six great grandchildren – Conner, Gavin, Mallory, Elizabeth, Cole and Hunter. Also two great great grandchildren. Brothers in laws- Austin (Smokey) Stanford, and W Otis Stanford.

Graduated Savannah High School in 1940, Savannah, GA.

World War II Combat Veteran (C.W.O.) and 2nd Lt. 9/16/1940 - 2/1/1946. 230th F.A, 30th Infantry Division. Services included invasion of Normandy, France, Omaha Beach "D" Day plus four, five major campaigns (11 months combat) Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe (Battle of the Bulge). Combat awards included the Bronze Star, the Certification of Recognition of Participation in Liberation of France from the government of France, and the French Legion of Honor medal received on 7/14/2014.

Henry was a life member of B.P.O. Elks #532 for over 40 years and the American Legion since 1946, 30th Infantry Division Association, Chatham Artillery, Tar Heel Division 30th Infantry, 118th and 55th Field Artillery Associates. He delivered Elks Meals on Wheels for over 15 years.

Mr. Phillips was an ordained Deacon at Sea Gate Baptist Church, Wilmington, NC; as well as multiple committees at the church.

Retired plant manager, Southern Wood Piedmont Co. (division of I.T.T. Corporation). After 42 years in the wood treatment industry he worked 19 years as an environmental consultant for Southern Wood Piedmont Co.

Mr. Phillips will be laid to rest beside his loving wife Lil, with a graveside service in Savannah, GA at Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery Saturday 19th at 1:30pm.
