Garden City-Herbert H. Clifton, 84, passed away on March 16, 2013, after an extended illness. He was a native of Chatham County and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Greenland where they were preparing for the construction of Thule Air Base.
After his discharge, he formed his own company, Delta Railroad Construction, Inc. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Garden City, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of Frank Baker Lodge for over fifty years, a past president of the Garden City Lions Club, and a volunteer for various community projects.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, A.H. and Annie Woods Clifton and a sister, Patricia Shanks.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carlyle Rogers Clifton and two sons, Stuart (Shari) Clifton of Brunswick, Steve (Gena) Clifton of Garden City; four grandsons, Benjamin and William Clifton of Brunswick and Christopher and Joshua Clifton of Garden City; a sister, Betty Lassiter of Hardeeville; a brother, Harold Clifton of Savannah, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. on Monday in the chapel of the funeral home.
Funeral: 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Garden City with burial to follow at Brewton Cemetery in Hagan.
