Herman Jackson Zipperer

Herman Jackson Zipperer, 93, died on March 8, 2019, at Westminster Woods in Jacksonville Florida after a brief illness.

Herman was born at his parent's home near Rincon, Georgia on November 4, 1925, to Perry Herman and Lessie Lee Nease Zipperer. He was the oldest of three boys, Samuel Wertz (Elizabeth) and O'Neill Edward Zipperer. He married the love of his life, Dora Eloise Kessler Zipperer, on August 21, 1946. They were married for 54 years until her death in 2003. They had three children: Pamela Eloise (Thomas) Davis, Douglas Herman (Suzanne) and Craig Jackson (Ann) Zipperer.

Herman graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1942 of Rincon High School. He joined the Army Air Corp where he was tail gunner on a B-17 during World War II. When he returned from Italy, he received business training and worked for Central of Georgia Railroad as a bookkeeper. When that business was sold, he was hired as Salvage Agent for the Seaboard Coastline in Savannah until he was transferred to Jacksonville, Florida in 1969. He retired from CSX in 1985.

He was a member of the Methodist Church wherever he lived and served faithfully doing whatever he was called to do, be it serving as treasurer, Lay speaker, or Sunday School Superintendent. His favorite thing to do was to teach Sunday School lessons and talk about the Bible. He loved to share his DIY skills and made sure that his sons learned to do things on their own as well. He taught his children how to walk closely to God and to always be grateful for all His blessings. He was interested in people, the government, and his church. He was known as a real gentleman. Herman was a long time member of the United Methodist Church, having been a very active member of Bethesda UMC until moving to Florida. He is currently an active member of Mandarin United Methodist Church.  He is survived by his 3 children, his 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, 3 sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A viewing will be on Monday, March 11 at Bethesda United Methodist Church at 1:00p.m., with the service to follow at 2:00p.m. Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home in Rincon, Georgia is handling the arrangements. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your favorite charity in Herman's memory.
