Obituary

Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, Effingham Chapel

Horace Cardell Peavy, 94, went home to praise our Father, reunited with loved ones who went on before, especially with his wife of 70 years, Eunice Boykin Peavy, and his eldest son, Horace Terrell Peavy, "Terry."  Horace died on the 31 st day of March 2014 at his son's home in Rincon, after having resided there for five years.  During their long marriage, Horace and Eunice had almost always lived in Port Wentworth (PW), had been members of the Methodist Church there, and were only separated by his military service.

Horace was born on a farm in Effingham County, just south of Oliver, on the 9th of October, 1919, and was christened at Oliver Methodist Church; he was the last son of the nine children of Eulie Hudson Peavy & Lula Maebell Woods Peavy of Screven County.  His family moved to his hometown of PW in 1922.  His mother ensured that the family was in church their first Sunday in town, and he has been associated with PW Methodist Church ever since.

Growing up in PW, Horace attended school there, and delivered the morning newspaper for two years to the whole community, from the Houlihan Bridge to Grange Road; his mother wouldn't allow him to charge for a paper for the preacher or for anyone looking for a job.  On Sunday evenings he attended Royal Ambassadors at the Baptist Church in PW.  He finished school in Savannah, catching the street car in PW to downtown and walking the several blocks south.  As a teenager, he helped at Walcher's gas station, and worked "brass check" at the Savannah Sugar Refinery where his father worked.  He was trained as a machinist at the U.S. Steel wire plant in PW, and worked as a mechanic at Dearing Chevrolet in Savannah.  His long career was at Atlantic Wood Industries in PW, where he retired as Plant Superintendent.  For a time in the 1950s, he also maintained his own business for television repair.

Horace Peavy was dedicated to his Lord and Savior, his wife, his family, his church, his home town and his country.  He taught Sunday School and served on the Administrative Board at his church.  Horace was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict; he joined Patton's army in Europe in 1944 and was awarded the Bronze Star in 1949; he was Regimental Motor Sergeant in Korea until 1952.  Following military service, he attended Armstrong College for a time.  He was Chaplain for his chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.  He traveled to Atlanta to aid in incorporation of the City of Port Wentworth in 1957, and served as one of its first councilmen.  He was also Grand Marshall of the Stand Up for America Parade in 1997.

Horace was preceded to Glory by his brothers, Lloyd Hudson Pevey, John Henry Peavy and Howard Ezell Peavy, and by his sisters Mae Peavy Brown and Lois Peavy Knight, "Scrap."  Left to honor his memory are his sons Robert Peavy of Rincon and Richard Peavy of Atlanta, his daughter-in-law, Barbara Mock Peavy of Port Wentworth and her children, Clay Peavy & his wife Jennifer Cornell Peavy of South Guyton, and Carla Peavy McCutchen & her husband, Jack McCutchen of Pooler, and great-grandchildren Peyton Faith McCutchen, Jackson McCutchen, and Chloe Lynn Peavy.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the love, concern and support expressed by so many for their beloved Father, Grandfather, and Friend. Even as our hearts grieve, for we miss him, our souls rejoice that he lives in blessed eternity.

His family will receive friends at the Effingham Chapel of Strickland's Funeral Home on Wednesday evening the 2 nd of April from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.  The funeral service will be held the next morning, Thursday, the 3rd of April, at 10:30 AM at Port Wentworth United Methodist Church, with a graveside service at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens on Bonaventure Road in Savannah.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be given to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
