Kill Devil Hills, NC – Howell Revier Shearouse, Jr. passed from this life on Friday, February 12, 2016. Mr. Shearouse was born in Savannah, GA on February 11, 1939. He was the son of the late Howell Sr. and Alice Gordon Shearouse of Bloomingdale, GA. He lived many places during his life including Rome, GA, Newport News and Hampton, VA, Chesapeake, VA, Woodbine, GA, Groton, CT, North Adams, MA and Kill Devil Hills, NC. Howell graduated from Martha Berry High School in Rome, GA and earned an Associate of Arts degree from the University of the State of New York.
Mr. Shearouse is survived by one sister, Gayle Mills of GA; three sons, Glenn Michael Shearouse and Kurt David Shearouse of Greenville, NC and Howell Revier Shearouse, III of Kill Devil Hills, NC; twin daughters, Casey Elizabeth and Cristy Lynn also of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and five grandchildren, Michael, Tanner, Christian, Teyana and Canyon.
Howell served in the US Naval Submarine Service for 24 years and retired as Master Chief, serving as the Command Master aboard two submarines and earned the Navy Achievement Medal prior to retirement. He also retired from Dare County where he served as head of the Fleet Maintenance Department, where due to his dedication to training and service to his community, established a local testing site for national accreditation in Automotive Service Excellence for the areas automotive repair establishments. He ultimately formed his own successful yard maintenance company which he ran until his third retirement. Howell loved his children and dedicated his leisure hours to their mutual enjoyment.
The graveside funeral and burial will be on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
