Port Wentworth-Mr. Hugh Carroll Butler, 76, went home to be with his Lord and Savior
on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at Hospice Savannah. Mr. Butler was a beloved
husband, daddy, granddaddy and great-granddaddy.
He was born in Ramhurst, Murray County, Georgia on September 1, 1934, to the late
George W. and Ethel Waldrop Butler.
Mr. Butler loved his God, his family, his church, and his country. He was an active
member of the First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth for 45 years, and was ordained as
a deacon in 1972, served on the active committee for most of those years, and was serving
on the deacon committee at the time of his death. He served as Sunday School Director
for approximately 25 years.
Mr. Butler served as chairman of the Good Samaritan Committee of Port Wentworth for
many years, providing food boxes for needy citizens at Christmas time and travel
assistance for persons passing through Port Wentworth who needed it.
He served as a member of the City Council of Port Wentworth for twenty years. He was
an active member of the Port Wentworth Lions Club for twenty-five years and served as
president of the club for several terms.
Mr. Butler served his country for four years as a member of the United States Air Force.
He was honored as Citizen of the Year of Port Wentworth in April of 2010. Mr. Butler
was employed by Omega Steel, Inc., of Bloomingdale, and had recently retired due to
health problems. He was an avid golfer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54-3/4 years, Carolyn Scott Butler of Port
Wentworth; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Jack Tice, of Garden City; a son
and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Blanche Butler of Port Wentworth; four
granddaughters, Ashley Bashlor (James) of Garden City, April Williams (Brian) of
Pooler, Christian Butler of Pooler, and Hillary Edenfield of Effingham County;
a great-grandson, Dylan Bashlor, and a great-granddaughter, Madison Williams; two
sisters, Margarette Gordon (Doyle) of Tunnell Hill; Renay Hammontree of Chatsworth;
one brother, William (Patsy) Butler of Eton; and several aunts, nieces and nephews. Also
surviving Mr. Butler are a sister-in-law and her husband, Wanda and Ransom Hudson of
Riceville, TN, brothers-in-law and their wives, Richard and Margie Scott of Chatsworth
and David and Millie Scott of Dalton.
The visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday evening, December 26, from 5 until
8 p.m.
The funeral service will be on Monday, December 27, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church
of Port Wentworth, 402 Pinehurst Place, with Rev. John Ashworth and Rev. Andy Scott
officiating. Mr. Butler will lie in state for one hour prior to the funeral service. Active
pallbearers will be Jim Vaughn, Drexel Taylor, Tom Hixon, Baxter (Mac) Farr, James
Tucker, Colin Jordan, Preston Blackwelder, W.A. Shuman, and Joseph Jones. Honorary
pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church, members of Port Wentworth
Lions Club, the Mayor and present and past members of City Council of Port Wentworth.
Burial will follow at Effingham Memorial Gardens on Hwy 119 in Effingham County
with military honors.
