Inez Hodges Nowell
Savannah – Mrs. Inez Hodges Nowell, 87, lost her 18 month battle with cancer and died
at the home of her daughter and son-in-law (Patty & Mike Brady) on Wednesday night.
She was born on April 28, 1927, in Statesboro, Ga. to the late M. Brannen Hodges, Sr. and Hattie Inez Smith Hodges. She attended Statesboro elementary schools and graduated with Honors from Statesboro High School in 1943. She moved to Savannah in 1945 where she met her husband, Walter. They were married on November 16, 1947 at Savannah's Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church and remained married until Walter's death in July of 2003.
They made their home in Pooler, where they reared 3 children and were dedicated members of Trinity United Methodist Church. Inez was very active in community and civic organizations and in 1981 was the first named "Citizen of the Year" by the Pooler Women's League. She was an active member of Athena Chapter of the American Business Women's Association where, during 1980 to 1988 she served as President, vice-President, Corresponding Secretary, Membership and Program Chairman. In 1982 she was name "Woman of the Year" by the ABWA and in 1989 she was named "Honorary Council Member of the Month" by the City of Pooler for her dedicated service to the community. In 1992, she retired from the Pooler Branch of the U.S. Postal Service, where she worked as a postal clerk and was given special recognition for 25 years of service.
She is preceded in death by two brothers, M. Brannen Hodges, Jr. and Harold H. Hodges of Statesboro. Survivors include her two daughters, Linda Patricia Brady (Mike) and Shirley Jean Cowart (Billy) both of Savannah and a son, Kenneth Randall Nowell of St. Louis, MO., seven grandchildren, Mark Moody (Lizette) of Savannah Ga., Melanie Moody (Jeremy Carlucci) of Atlanta, Ga., Keith Barker, Judson and Jennifer Cowart all of Savannah, Ga, and Alyson and Nicole Nowell of St. Louis, MO., and three great-grandchildren, Will Moody of Savannah, Ga., Aaron Carlucci of Atlanta, Ga., and Ethan Leonard of Savannah. Two sisters, Joy Swann (Harold) of Raleigh-Durham, NC., and Gail McGlamery of Statesboro, Ga. and a brother, James Clark Hodges of Statesboro, Ga. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation: 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Saturday, September 13th 2014 at Thomas C. Strickland Funeral Home; West Chatham Chapel, Pooler Ga.
Services: 3:00 PM on Sunday, September 14th 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Pooler. Interment will be at Gravel Hill Cemetery.
