Springfield – Jack F. Carter, 85, passed away March 6, 2024 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Jack was born on June 11, 1938 to Ira and Onola Smith Carter in Wheeler County, GA. He met Myrtice Johnson in February of 1958 and they were married in December and were married for 65 years. He moved his family to Effingham County in 1965.
He moved to Savannah when he was 16 to do sheetrock work and was the only sheetrock man on Hilton Head Island for many years. In 1977 he started Jack Carter Construction Company and worked until he was 83 years old. He loved to work like no one we ever knew, to which his work is evident in Effingham and the surrounding counties. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 1 sister; daughter; Theresa Carter; son, Darrell Carter; grandson, Noah Murdaugh; son-in-law, Jamie Porter.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtice Carter; daughters, Karen Porter and Lora Murdaugh (Shannon); son, Joel Carter; grandchildren, Wesley Porter (Rosie), Leia Wampler (Ethan), Rachel Mobley (Jacob), Harley Ballard (Dalton), Hunter Bennett (Shaw), Carter Murdaugh, Walker Carter, Gabby Carter, Joelie Carter, and Waylon Murdaugh; great-grandchildren, Braxton Porter, Ira and Cort Wampler, Elliana Mobley, Potter Ballard, Benedict and Sebastian Bennett; sister, Sara Graham; a number of nieces and nephews; and his caregivers, Joyce, Tina, Patricia, Jennifer, and Ruthie.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the funeral home chapel.
Interment will follow in Springfield Cemetery Annex.
