A. Jackson Zipperer
SPRINGFIELD— A. Jackson Zipperer died peacefully at home on his cherished farm, on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at the age of 97. He was preceded in death by parents, Thomas E. and Willie Harn Zipperer, and wife of 72 years, Theresa Kleinsteuber Zipperer.
Mr. Zipperer was a veteran of the U.S. Army occupation of Japan at the end of World War II. He was retired from the United States Postal Service, where he was a letter carrier in Garden City and Port Wentworth and was known affectionately as "Mr. Zip." He had worked previously for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York (MONY), and the Cut Art Stone Company of Savannah.
In addition to his occupations in Savannah, Mr. Zipperer owned a farm, where he raised crops, livestock, catfish, grapes, blueberries, and vegetables. His friends and family always looked forward to receiving a bottle of his homemade wine at Christmas. With cuttings from his own grape vines, he helped many people start their own vineyards, going annually to help the owners prune and tend those vineyards.
Mr. Zipperer was an avid fisherman in the ocean and tidal streams around Savannah, the creeks and rivers of Effingham County, and in his own farm pond. He enjoyed putting on fish fries for family and friends.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Springfield, most of his life except for an interim period when he lived in Savannah and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He became active in church at an early age, and as a youth started the fire in the pot-bellied stove before church services, rang the church bell, and pumped the organ. As he grew older he became an officer of the Georgia-Alabama Lutheran youth program, and as an adult served as Sunday school teacher and superintendent, as a choir member, and as a member of the church council. Until the age of 95 he had for many years provided homemade wine for Holy Communion.
Mr. Zipperer is survived by sons, A. Jackson Zipperer, Jr. (Dimples), of Murfreesboro, TN, and Carl T. Zipperer (Celeste), of Springfield; daughters, Theresa Z. Butler and Betty Z. Symonds, both of Springfield; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., the Rev. Dr. James L. Cavanah II, presiding. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey East in Savannah. Remembrances may be given to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 353, Springfield, GA 31329.
