Obituary

Bloomingdale - Jacquelyn W. Lowman, widow of George A. Lowman, Sr., passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 1, at the home George built for his family in 1954. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Guy V. Wilkinson and Genevieve Gordon Wilkinson Bagley, brother Wade Renelle Wilkinson and sister Glennis Anne Bagley.

Jackie was born in Roanoke, Virginia but spent most of her life in Georgia. She was a graduate of Brewton Parker College. After marriage and four children, she returned to college and received both a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Education from Georgia Southern College. For over 35 years, Jackie taught school in Effingham County, in several Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, and taught the 4th Grade at Calvary Baptist Day School. She touched the lives of many during her career as a school teacher.

In addition to being a member of the First Baptist Church of Bloomingdale, she was a Sunday School Teacher and served as the Church Clerk for more than 25 years. She was involved in many organizations including the Altrusa Club, the Savannah Women's Business Club, the American Business Women's Association, the Chatham County Retired Teachers Association, the Effingham County Retired Teachers Association, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She served as a poll watcher, on the Board of Equalization, and as secretary for the Chatham County Municipal Association.

When Bloomingdale was incorporated as a City in 1974, Jackie was elected as the first councilwoman and was re-elected for a second term in 1976. During this time, she was responsible for obtaining the land for a recreation center now known as Taylor Park. She also served the City for many years as a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission. In 2004, Bloomingdale's Mayor and City Council recognized her as the Citizen of the Year.

Jackie loved people and flowers, and was one of the founding members of the Bloomingdale Garden Club. She played bridge and took dance lessons from Arthur Murray Studios competing in numerous dance competitions. Jackie traveled to France, Luxembourg, Germany, Holland, England, China, Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Mexico, Japan, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. When she was asked by a Savannah Morning News reporter in 2004 to reflect on her life, Jackie answered by saying, "I'll just say, I've had a full and blessed life." Her beloved family, friends, and former students will miss her but draw comfort in those words.

She is survived by her two sons, George Anthony Lowman, Jr. and Col. James Mark Lowman (Carol); her two daughters, Anne Lowman Hales Scheer (Steve) and Glennis Lowman Daniel (B.B.); grandchildren, Holly Anne Hales, Philip Alan Hales, John McPipkin, Jessica Lowman, Johanna Lowman, Rindi Daniel, Kristin Daniel; great-grandson, Hunter Alan Hales; Uncle George K.
