James Furman Lee

James Furman Lee passed away Sunday evening, November 20, 2011, at Embracing Hospice in Cumming after an extended illness. He was born Sept. 10, 1940, in Savannah to the late James Frank and Anna Rahn Lee.

Furman was a lifelong resident of Effingham County. He attend Carlisle Military Academy, where he lettered in football, and graduated from Effingham County High School in 1959, where he hit the first grand-slam home run at the then-new school.

Furman retired after 40 years of service as a conductor for Seaboard Coastline Railroad/CSX Transportation. He trained for the National Guard at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and served from 1961-1969.

He loved to hunt and fish and took great joy in teaching his son and nephews the art of hunting and fishing, which they enjoy to this day.

Furman is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kathleen Engelhardt Lee; his children, Dr. Cheryl Lynn Lee of Woodstock, Sandra Lee Marshall and her husband Patrick of Johns Creek, and James Wesley Lee and his wife Susan of Springfield; his stepsons Charles E. Driggers of Cumming and David A. Driggers of Augusta; grandchildren Samuel Lee, Jameson, Sheppard and Kellen Marshall, David Driggers and Michael Naas; sister Eleanor Lee Scarbrough and husband Bill of Savannah; brother John E. Lee of Fayetteville; and nephews Drs. Frank Scarbrough and Glen Scarbrough, both of Savannah, and Stephen Lee of Lawrenceville.

Funeral services 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, at Springfield United Methodist Church with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment immediately following in Springfield Cemetery.
