James William "Jim" Long
Springfield- James "Jim" William Long, 77, passed away Monday, April 16, 2012 at Memorial Health.
Jim was born in Richmond, Virginia on April 5, 1935. He graduated from Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal, VA, where he averaged 27 points per game, a school record. He was named to Washington DC "all metropolitan team" and also named to Virginia "all state team". He was awarded a scholarship to Georgia Southern Teachers College, now Georgia Southern University. He led the team in rebounds and recorded 22 rebounds against Mercer University in one half. Jim coached basketball at Effingham County High School, both boys and girls. He won 454 basketball games and was presented the Scholastic Coach Magazine superlative plaque. He was named 1986 coach of the year.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Abner & Mable Long of Richmond.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Will M. Long; his sons, Brad (Stephanie) & Bruce (Kristie) Long; his grandchildren, Brandon (Kelly), Tiffany (Zachary), Mallory and Colton; and his great-grandchild, Jewell Long; a sister, Faye Loving of Richmond, VA; and two brothers-in-law, George Loving and Mac Marchman. Jim was truly a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by many.
Visitation: 1:30 – 3:30 pm Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Funeral: 3:30 pm Wednesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Interment: Effingham Memorial Gardens.
