Obituary

James Allen "Jim" Murphy, 81, passed away January 5, 2023, after a short illness.

Born in Guyton to Vance Burdette Murphy and Florence LaRue Kight Murphy, he was the eighth of their 10 surviving adult children and grew up in the old homeplace on Pine Street. He was a skilled mechanic, retired from Georgia Pacific, and had lived in Pineora and Savannah as an adult.

He is survived by his son James Richard "Jimmy" Murphy of Florida; two sisters, Florence M. Davis of Bloomingdale, and Linda M. Harn of Daisy; brother Pat Murphy of Guyton; countless nieces and nephews; and his former wife Macey Coleman Martin of Pineora.

His parents, siblings Richard B. Murphy, John Vernon "Pete" Murphy, Carlton Murphy, Sophie Caroline Murphy, Vance W. "Son" Murphy, Talmadge Murphy, Annette Murphy Altman, Leona Murphy Harn, and Myra Murphy as well as step-daughter Robin Kinard predeceased him.

The family sincerely thanks Dr. Randy Bottner of Savannah for his skilled care of Mr. Murphy.

We are left to cherish his good heart, ready laugh, and self-sacrificing generosity. He was a natural mechanical whiz, and many benefitted from his willingness for many years to aid friends and family alike and apply his abundant expertise to solving all manner of mechanical challenges for them.

He will be greatly missed.

Graveside services will be 2:30 pm, Sunday January 8, 2023 in Guyton Cemetery.

Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, Effingham Chapel (912) 754-6421.
