In loving memory of Jeanette Mitchell Collins (1931-2024)
We announce the peaceful passing of Jeanette Mitchell Collins at the age of 92 on Saturday, April 6th, 2024. During her final days, Jeanette was surrounded by love and compassion from her family, the staff from The Oaks at Pooler, and Hospice Savannah.
Jeanette was tough as nails and never hesitated to speak her mind. She thrived as a homemaker but also enjoyed her work at the telephone company and as a realtor. Jeanette was a proud member of the First Baptist Church of Garden City. She was preceded in death by her husband and soulmate, Vernon Collins (affectionately known as V.C. Honey), her sister Virginia Byrd, and her daughter-in-law, Sandy Collins. Anyone who knew Jeanette will surely remember her steadfast devotion and loyalty to her family. She is survived by her brother, Lewis Mitchell (Vicki); her son, Tony Collins; and her daughter, Judy Kessler (Craig). Her unwavering love and compassion for her two grandchildren, Madelyn Lowrimore (Patrick) and Austin Kessler (Kathryn), will forever be etched in their hearts. In addition to her immediate family, Jeanette was blessed with many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends, each cherished and beloved.
Jeanette's spunky and unapologetic nature inspired those around her to be true to themselves. She will be remembered for her commanding presence, a testament to her strong-willed spirit. She always looked out for her family, and set an example of how a woman can fiercely love and care for her husband. Jeanette enriched the lives of many with her hospitality. Her delightful cooking and lively personality brought people together, always sparking an atmosphere for conversation and laughter.
Jeanette's love story with V.C. Honey was one for the ages, and we take comfort in knowing they are reunited in death. She will be dearly missed, but her spirit and tenacity live on in her family and the many lives she touched.
Visitation will be held at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Homes in Pooler, GA, on Friday, April 12th from 3:00 to 4:00 pm; and a funeral service will immediately follow at 4:00 pm. The graveside service will take place at Greenwich Cemetery in Savannah, GA, on Saturday, April 13th at 10:00 am.
The family kindly requests that any memorial donations be sent to Hospice Savannah (https://www.hospicesavannah.org/give/).
