Mrs. Jewell S. Slater, widow of Leaston Nathaniel Slater, died Monday, May 7,
2007, at Hospice Savannah.
She was born in Ludowici, Georgia on July 6, 1918 to Arthur and Corinne Smith.
She was a longtime, faithful member of Faulkville Baptist Church. Over the years, she
served in different capacities at her Church. She was an avid fisherman and a longtime
member of Cuyler Hunting Club.
She is survived by five daughters, Jeanette and Ed Rouse of Tallahassee, Florida;
Faye and Sonny Hodges of Port Wentworth, Georgia; Bea and Fritz Nitz of Rincon,
Georgia; Sue Stafford of Sylvania, Georgia; Bobbie and W.H. Teague of Smyrna,
Georgia; and special "nephew-son", James Madison and Bonnie Smith. She is also
survived by fifteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, fifteen
great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Dunham of Hinesville, Georgia; one brother,
Thomas Monroe and Ora Smith of Lakeland, Florida, a number of nieces and nephews,
and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends at the Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral
Home, West Chatham Chapel on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held in the chapel of the Thomas C. Strickland & Sons
Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Sam Self
officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery on Dean Forest Road.
Pallbearers will be Parker Dunham, Jody Dunham, Langston Dunham, Dale
Smith, Garrett Smith, Omer Steedley, David Steedley, and Jeffrey Slater. Honorary
Pallbearers will be the Deacons and the Young At Heart from Faulkville Baptist Church,
Bobby Norton, and Micky Clark.
