Obituary
Mr. Jimmy L. VanHook, 80, of Pooler, Georgia, died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Hospice House.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Omer and Mary VanHook, sisters June Finnie, Christina Liska, and Shirley VanHook, and grandson Anthony "Tony" M. VanHook.
Mr. VanHook is survived by his wife of 58 years, JoAnn Coburn VanHook, their five children, Terry VanHook Hill (husband Larry), Bloomingdale, Donna VanHook Corey (husband Larry) Savannah, J. Tim VanHook (wife Martha Ann) Pooler, Michael A. ("Tony") VanHook, Savannah, and Connie VanHook Gallo (husband Anthony) Pooler. He is also survived by his two sisters, Beverly Sizemore (husband Bill), MaryLou Ruggles, brother David Michael VanHook (wife Jane), grandchildren, L. Duane Hill, Denton C. Hill, Jessica and Chris Columbia, Adam Corey, James L. VanHook, Elizabeth and Luke Guimont, Heather and Josh Fralick, Tiffany VanHook, Andrew Gallo, and Toni Gallo; great grandchildren Dayton and Palmer Columbia, and Dominic Fralick; several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Nola.
Mr. VanHook was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, and joined the Air Force in 1950. He served in the Korean War, and was stationed at Hunter Army Air Base until his honorable discharge in August 1954. In that time he met his wife, JoAnn Coburn, and they were married in 1954. After his discharge from the Air Force, Mr. VanHook began working at Savannah Sugar Refinery until 1968, when he and his family relocated to Houma, La. for an employment opportunity with Southdown Sugar. In 1979, Mr. VanHook and his family returned to Savannah, and he began working at the Hyatt Hotel of Savannah until his retirement.
Mr. VanHook participated in several community and fraternal organizations during his life, including: the Jaycees, Carnival Krewe of Terreanians (Houma, La.), Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and Adjutant Staff, Charter member of Shenanigans Society, American Legion Post #184, and volunteered and was a member of the historic society of the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
He was a skilled electrician and mechanic, a firearms enthusiast and collector, an avid hunter and fishermen, and enjoyed antique automobiles.
The visitation will be at Thomas Strickland and Sons Funeral Home (Pooler) on May 13, 2013, from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm, with the Rosary from 6:00-6:30 pm, the same evening.
The funeral mass will be at 11:30 AM on May 14, 2013, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church located at 501 South Coastal Highway, Port Wentworth, Georgia. Burial with military honors will follow at Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery.
