JOHN KARL MOODY
-BLOOMINGDALE- John Karl Moody, age 91, passed away April 1, 2017, at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta, Georgia, after a long illness.
Karl was born in Chatham County at the Telfair Hospital on November 19, 1925, to the late Marion L. and Marjorie A. Moody. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Enid Scott Moody; and two brothers, Marion L. Moody, Jr. and Donald W. Moody. Karl lived at Monteith, Savannah, Tybee Island, and Garden City before moving to Bloomingdale in 2009.
He graduated from Savannah High School and the University of Georgia and served the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. Karl was self-employed with his father for over 21 years; together, they owned the National Tool and Trailer Rental in Savannah at two different locations on Bay Street.
After an early retirement, Karl completed training at the King's Way Missionary Institute in McAllen, Texas, and the International Dental Institute in San Diego, California. He then served as a missionary to Mexico and Honduras for over 32 years. He ran dental clinics and performed other mission work to include well drilling projects to eliminate waterborne illnesses.
Karl was also a most avid gardener. He was well-known for his vegetable gardens in Garden City and supplied restaurants, such as Mrs. Wilkes, as well as family and friends, with fresh seasonal produce throughout the year.
He considered one of his greatest accomplishments as being the oldest living Moody family member.
He is survived by a son, Walter Scott Moody, Sr. of Guyton; a daughter, Karleen Moody Grevemberg (Vincent) of Savannah; his sister, Margie Moody Chance; a cousin, Eleanor R. Coburn (Jack); four grandchildren; a niece and several nephews; and several great nieces and great nephews.
The graveside service for Karl's family and friends will be at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park located at 1600 Wheaton in Savannah at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017.
