Guyton – John Stephen Newton, 71, passed away October 5, 2023 at M.U.S.C. after a long illness.
Born in Norman Park, GA on July 17, 1952, he graduated from the Grady School of Journalism in 1974. He was general manager of Tell-N-Sell for 35 years. Editor of the La Voz Latina Newspaper for 15 years, John championed immigrants' rights in the Savannah area and served as a board member of the Metropolitan Savannah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of Springfield Oaks Church where he was a Lay Leader, former chairman of the Missions Committee, and sang in the choir. John was a Moultrie Packers and Georgia Bulldogs fan. He was a prolific mixed-media folk artist, and he loved visiting the mountains where he fished with his wife, Jeanne.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David Lanier Newton and Opal Benton Newton.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Newton; sons, Colin Gilmer and Alex Gilmer; daughter, Taylor Roosevelt; grandchildren, Aidan Gilmer, Archer Gilmer, and Lillian Roosevelt; brother, Bud Newton; sisters, Kathy Strange and Alice Walsh; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, October 13, 2023 at Springfield Oaks Church followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Mission Support Fund at Springfield Oaks Church (210 Cleveland St, Springfield, GA 31329)
