Pooler– John Julius Powell, 86, died Monday, March 4, 2013 at his home.
The Savannah native, raised in Port Wentworth, was retired from American Cyanimid/Kemira after 24 years service. The WW II Merchant Marine veteran, who saw service in the Pacific & Atlantic Theaters, was a member of First Baptist Church of Pooler and the Sam Elkins Sunday School Class. He enjoyed gardening, travelling with Vera in their RV, and southern history.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Grace Tompkins Powell; parents, George E. and Alpha I. Rouse Powell; brothers, George E. Powell, Jr., Quincey R. Powell, James W. Powell; and sister, Evola Tyson Powell.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Vera M. Jones McNair Powell; sons, David Powell (Lila R.) and Kenneth Powell; two granddaughters, Amber J. Powell Brooks and Marcy Elizabeth Powell; great-grandson, William David Brooks; two step-daughters, Linda Fields (Ben) and Crystal Adkins (Pat); several step-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Nell Powell; and Vera's three sisters and brother.
Funeral: 11 am Thursday, March 7, 2013 in the funeral home chapel with visitation an hour before the service.
Interment: Forest Lawn Memory Gardens
