Joyce Sands Mingledorff
Springfield- Joyce Sands Mingledorff, 89, of Springfield, GA and Bryn Mawr, PA passed away peacefully in Springfield on December 7, 2016. Joyce was born in Goodwater, Alabama and graduated as valedictorian of Goodwater High School in 1943. She then graduated from Huntington College with a degree in Math and Biology, and received her Master's Degree in Library Science from Emory University. Following her passion for science, she worked for numerous years as a bacteriologist for the Centers for Disease Control, and later as a medical librarian at Emory University Medical Library and at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. While on the faculty at Emory University, she met her loving husband, Dr. Ernest Mingledorff, who was a professor at Emory Dental School.
Joyce was predeceased by her mother, Margaret Sands, and her father, Richard Sands. Joyce is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Dr. Ernest B. Mingledorff, her daughter Ann and son-in-law Mike Barry of Atlanta, her beloved granddaughters Elizabeth and Caroline, many nieces and nephews, and caregivers Amber Flagg, Eva Goldwire, Cynthia Duncan, Pauline Gains, Wanda Hall and Vicky Goldwire. She was a proud, devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother and an amazing role model for being a strong, independent woman.
Joyce was an avid student of Scottish History and the history of Embroidery. She was a member of Jerusalem Lutheran Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Embroiderer' s Guild of America. She was a gentle soul who will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at Jerusalem Lutheran Church on Monday, December 12 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Springfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Thomas Strickland Funeral Home on Sunday December 11 from 3 – 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made to Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 2766 Ebenezer Rd., Rincon, GA 31326 or the Georgia Salzburger Society, 2980 Ebenezer Rd., Rincon, GA 31326.
