Julian Coakley Space
Springfield – Julian Coakley Space, 54, formerly of Savannah, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2016 at Memorial Health surrounded by his loving family.
Julian was best known as "Jay" and attended Savannah Country Day School, Asheville School for Boys, and Armstrong State College where he studied Criminal Justice. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church where he served as acolyte under Father Ralston. He accomplished so much in his career having been a Fireman, E.M.T., Surgical Tech, and then a Law Enforcement Officer. He was a Police Officer in Savannah, Chatham County, and Effingham County where he retired as Sheriff. He attended the Sheriff's Academy and the National Sheriff's Academy. He was a member of the Oglethorpe Club, Effingham County Exchange Club, Rotary Club, and Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his father and step-mother, Julian Boudre Space and Mary Foy Space; mother, Georgiann Thompson Space; grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Julian A. Space, Mr. & Mrs. W. Coakley Thompson; his goddaughter, Dallas E. Boyles; his mother-in-law, Nancy King; and his step-sister, Elizabeth Sapp.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Rebecca King Space; sister, Austin Hall (Dennis); step-brother, James E. Vaughn (Mary); sister-in-law, Donna Boyles (Dale); brother-in-law, Rodney King (Dana); father-in-law, Don King; lifelong friend, Frank Hardeman; his goddaughter, Danielle Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Springfield United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Brewton Cemetery in Hagan.
In lieu of flowers donations may be given to the Treutlen House, 131 Old Augusta Rd. Central, Rincon, GA 31326 or Bethesda Home For Boys, 9520 Ferguson Ave., Savannah, GA 31406.
