June Elizabeth Williams Edwards was born in Cobbtown, Georgia, June 17, 1934, and was a long-time resident of Chatham County. She was the daughter of Alvie and Hilma Wrenn Williams. A graduate from Collins High, Class of '51, maintaining lifelong friendships with many of her classmates. She attended Georgia State College for Women, now Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, and Armstrong State College. She taught in the public and private schools in Chatham County. She was a Life Member of the Benjamin O. Sprague Parent Teacher Organization where she served as President. She served as a mentor in the public schools, reading with the children. She loved her family reunions. Her capacity for friendship was limitless, cherishing friendships formed in childhood, in college, and throughout her life. She worked tirelessly on her family and class reunions, keeping everyone connected with and she never missed a family reunion. Family was so important to her.
Although diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2021, June refused to let her diagnosis define her. She fought a battle against the disease, seeking alternative treatments and with a positive attitude.
She was a long-time member of the Garden City United Methodist Church, never hesitating to take leadership roles, teaching Bible studies, visiting members in the nursing home each week. She loved her church and church family. She served as President of the United Methodist Women for many years. She was a member of the Hooks Circle and taught Sunday School for over 50 years, a member of the choir and served as substitute pianist. She served as chairman of the Administrative Board, council, and served on the trustees and was the historian for the church for many years. She and her husband served as Youth Leaders in the church. She was a member of the Prime Timers and served as chairman for serval years. She was an associate member of the Georgia Salzburg Society. She worked with the Girl Scouts. A member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served many leadership roles, the United Daughters of the confederacy where she served as chaplain, secretary and parliamentary. She coached girls league softball. She was an avid reader and belonged to several book clubs. She loved working crossword puzzles and did extensive researching of her family ancestors throughout the United States and several European countries and enjoyed helping others with their research. She and her husband loved to travel. She had a passion for Music. She and her husband were monthly volunteers for Meals on Wheels for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Walker Edwards, Jr., and her beloved brother, Kenneth Clinton Williams. Surviving is her loving devoted husband, Ronald Edwards Sr. of 68 years; son, William Randall Edwards (Missy Edwards); granddaughter, Meredith Edwards; grandson, Walker Edwards, III (Megan); great-grandchildren, Zoey Edwards and Donna Tyler Edwards Hewitt; sister-in-law, Betty Williams; nephews, Gene Williams and Clint Williams.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Garden City United Methodist Church or Hospice Savannah.
The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, in the Garden City United Methodist Church social hall located at 62 Varnedoe Ave. The funeral to honor June's life will follow at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery.
